If you love adventure and breathtaking landscapes, hiking the Santa Ana Volcano is one of the best experiences you can have in El Salvador. The good news? From Los Naranjos Town Houses, you’ll enjoy a hardly known route with far more beautiful landscapes.

The volcano, also known as Ilamatepeq, is about an hour away by car. The road winds through coffee farms, forests, and small villages, offering beautiful views even before you start the hike. Most visitors begin their climb from Parque Nacional Los Volcanes, but there’s also a different route from our area that lets you enjoy the peaceful mountains, cow fields and coffee plantations on your way to the volcano.

The hike itself usually takes about two hours up and one and a half down from Parque Nacional Los Volcanes, depending on your pace. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most stunning sights in Central America: a turquoise crater lake surrounded by mist and volcanic rock. On a clear day, you can even see Lake Coatepeque shimmering in the distance.

What to Bring

We recommend starting early in the morning. Bring:

  • Plenty of water

  • Sunscreen and hat

  • Comfortable hiking shoes

  • A light jacket (it can get cold at the top)

  • Your camera - the views are unforgettable

Duration and Difficulty

The hike from Los Naranjos takes about 5 to 7 hours to climb and around 4 hours to descend. It’s considered difficult due to the length and because it's steep in some areas but manageable for anyone with good fitness.

We recommend starting your hike early in the morning.
